Jason Carr

Musical Director

After winning the 1988 Vivian Ellis Prize for young writers of musicals, Jason went on to compose the musical Born Again (from Ionesco's Rhinocerosdirected by Peter Hall), starring Mandy Patinkin and Jose Ferrer (Chichester).  More recent compositions include songs for the Paris Lido's world tour and a ballet score, Last Night at the Empire (Clore Studio Upstairs, Royal Opera House).

Over 30 theatre scores for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre, the West End and Broadway, include Donmar productions of Design for Living, The Glass Menagerie and Suddenly Last Summer, and many people seem to remember Bim! Bam! Bom!, the 'winning' entry in EuroVision (Vaudeville)!

Also in demand as a pianist and arranger, Jason has appeared in two shows with Maria Friedman,  By Special Arrangement (Donmar and Whitehall);  and more recently at the New Ambassadors.  He has also worked with Elisabeth Welch, Betty Garrett, Kitty Carlisle Hart, in Noel and Gertie (Duke of York's), and is a musical director for the Lost Musicals.  Most particularly, he appears in his cabaret show, Listen Up! (An Evening with Liza Pulman and Jason Carr), which premiered at The Other Place (RSC, Stratford).

During June 2002, Jason accompanied Edward Petherbridge at the Jermyn Street Theatre in Pomp and Force of Circumstance.

Jason is currently Associate Composer at the Chichester Festival Theatre, where his musical of The Water Babies will be directed by Jeremy Sams.

A new CD of Jason's songs, Listen Up!, features a number of great voices from the world of musical theatre, including Michael Ball, Philip Quast and Maria Friedman.  This was released in June of 2004, and is available at  Dress Circle or  Amazon.
